You need to learn how to do word problems. You are going to face them in your schooling for a long time and in real life most problems are word problems.

1. Collect the data: P = 42, L = 2W and W = ?
2. Determine which formula you need: P = WL
3. Insert the known values and the unknown value X as the variable that you are trying to solve for.

P = WL => 42 = 2W times W => 42 = 3W once you know what W is you only have to divide W by 2 to get the length.

The rest of the solution is left for you to solve.

What is the most important part of these problems is not how to solve the equation, but how to set up the problem. It's a pattern of thinking called logic, once your figure that out things get a whole lot easier. Anyone can punch a few numbers into their calculator, but the key is knowing which numbers to punch in, and what the relationships are between the numbers.
