A server is any device, usually a computer that can share files with other "client" computers for the benefit of a network. There are many types of servers ie: print servers, file servers, email servers and so on. These devices provide the backbone to a server-client network. They are generally not found on a peer to peer network such as you can find in many homes. Generally the bigger the network the more servers you will find on it. However, no network can exceed the 5-4-3 rule which states that you can only have a maximum of five segments, connected through four repeaters, or concentrators, and only three of the five segments may contain users. Servers are often dedicated, meaning that they perform no other tasks besides their server tasks.

In information technology, a server is a computer system that provides services to other computing systems—called clients—over a network. The term is most commonly applied to a complete computer system today, but it is also used occasionally to refer only to the hardware or software portions of such a system.

Good Luck.
