Hi,
I am a Chessplayer with Elo over 2400. I think it depends what Level you have to answer this question.

Fritz 9 is for sure stronger as Chessmaster, but there are a handfull of programs who are better as Fritz. The User Interface of Fritz/Shredder/Junior (they use all the same Interface) is very elegant.

But if you want to LEARN Chess then i think is Chessmaster better. The Level of Chessmaster is still strong enough to kick your a**, hehe. The Learning section of Chessmaster is much better as the Trainingspart of Fritz.

Fritz 9 did not compete. But I think that Fritz would not have won this tournament. I guess that Fritz 9 would have been around Place 4-5.

Chessmaster is a relatively weak engine compared to the Fritz family (Shredder, Junior, Hiarcs etc)...

However, Chessmaster is a great program for learning...it has a couple of hundred personalities which play at all levels, so you can have it play a very weak game or a very strong game.

(When I say it's a relatively weak engine, I'm comparing it to other engines, not to people...it can still kick the butts of over 90% of the people in the world who play chess, when set to its highest level of strength)

Chessmaster also has some excellent tutorials on different subjects.

Chessmaster was really designed by "gamers" as opposed to real chess programmers (which is where Fritz, etc comes from).

Chessmaster also has a nice analysis feature...it actually narrates it's analysis when you play it back... it doesn't analyze variations the way Fritz, Shredder etc can, but it is certainly adequate for a lot of people's needs.

I've heard that Yasser Seirawan himself supplied the voice of the Chessmaster.

Also, Josh Waitzkin (of "Searching for Bobby Fischer" fame) has HIS own tutorial section, in which he annotates many of his own games. That's a great feature.

I can second Fritz. It's has a very strong engine, good analysis tools, and good features to keep over the board playing/ learning interesting (AI personality types, different playing modes, etc.)
It also integrates with chessbase cd-roms.
