Haha, biking would be fun, but a bit far and tiring.

Take the train, it is fast and easy.

A single journey 2nd class ticket from Rotterdam Centraal to Amsterdam Centraal will cost you 12,60 Euros

It does not matter what date you travel, the price is always the same.

A return journey (return on the same day) will cost you 22,50 Euros

Express trains (intercity service) leave approx. every 15 minutes and the trip will take about 40 minutes.

You have to buy your ticket at the station before boarding the train. You can queue up at the counter ticket selling point or you can use the automatic ticket machines. If you have never used a Dutch ticket machine, there is a simluation of how the ticket machines work here:

Have a good trip!

By bicycling...LOL...really! They have bikes all over Holland and designated bike paths...some with their own signal lights! You can rent a bike, or buy them used. All over Amsterdam, you'll see decaying bikes that were chained up and left... However, if you're not very athletic and 50K is a bit far, even if you are...especially if it's the rainy season...there's always the express train to the airport (takes about 20 minutes and leaves every 10 minutes) and again to Rotterdam or by car (just jump on the expressway, A20, from Museum Str. then look for the signs into the city center).

PS: Check out this cute and informative site for great tidbits about these two cities which are separated (more-or-less) by the airport. Also, Fodors is a great resource.

By car. Just take the A16, direction The Hague than the A20.
Than take the A13 which will lead you to the A4 to Amsterdam.

Before Amsterdam you will have the choice: go left or right. You have to know which side of Amsterdam you have to go. The A10 (which starts at the end of the A4) is like a ring round Amsterdam. If you go the wrong way, it takes about 45 minutes to go arround Amsterdam
