Louis Armstrong's nickname was 'Satchmo'.That is the short way of saying-'Satchel mouth'.As one may know a satchel is another name for a bag, as in school bag. This nickname was used to describe the musician's mouth-Not very flattering I guess. However Mr. Armstrong seems to have taken it in good stride as he answered to the name and it appears that it even was used as an endearment or 'nice' name.Another nickname used for him was 'Pops'.This did not appear to be as popular as 'satchmo'.

Satchmo! The most wonderful trumpet player ever. He played with his soul, and likely did more to break the colour barrier than any other person. It was almost impossible to listen to him without smiling.
