You do need a passport to go to Mexico now. It wasn't that way before 9/11, but you need one now. Sorry.

You can go to Mexico without a passport this year. Beginning next year everyone will need a passport going to Mexico. From past experience though having a passport while traveling in Mexico does make it easier.

I went to Cancun April 2002 and I did not need a passport then. Just my birth certificate and my drivers license. However, things could have changed since then. Plus, it was annoying to have to carry those things around all the time. THe passport is much easier.

Now until the end of December all you need is a photo i.d. and a certified birth certificate. After December you will need a passport, as that is when the law changes.
