you want the cross white?
Well the wax, and the tape will work too, but heres an alternative.
this allows for more decorative, preplanned stuff.
Take a piece paper, or a thin cardboard, draw the shape of the cross, put a piece of plastic wrap over that. where you drew the cross, put a coat of vaseline on it. cut out the plastic wrap & Board into the shape of the cross. make sure you leave it on a flat surface to avoid moving the plastic wrap. it should be facing upwards.
carefully, now, place the shirt on top of the plastic wrap and press down really hard, make sure the plastic wrap is sticking to the shirt!
immediately tie up your shirt, or bunch it up, as you would to tie dye it. make sure your tie dye is ready before you do this.
try to make sure the plastic wrap is still stuck to the shirt, if it comes off easily, try more vaseline.
people use vaseline without the plastic wrap. but it makes a mess. :)

If you want to put a cross on a T-shirt, you have to have dye on the part that will be the cross. How can you "dye a cross onto" it, otherwise.
I guess you mean you want to get a cross onto a shirt by dyeing everything but a cross-shaped area, in which case you make the cross on the shirt with hot wax. Then you dye the shirt. Then you boil the wax away.

Melt some white candle wax and paint a cross on the shirt with the melted wax.
The dye will not soak in where the wax is.
Then, after dying it, place the shirt inbetween a few layers of newspaper or brown paper shopping bags and iron it. This will remove the wax from the shirt since the heat from the iron will melt the wax, causing it to soak into the paper.

sure hun, melt wax so it penetrates the area u wanna keep from the dye, and be careful not to scrunch the t-shirt when u dye it..lay it flat in the dye so the wax dosent crack, now when ur done, let it dry and to remove the wax just put brown paper both sides of the shirt, remove excess wax and iron the paper with hot iron to remove any imbedded residue.... wash the t-shirt normally and wear it proudly...cos u made it...lol... tc : )

1. Lay the shirt flat 2. Put your finger in the middle and twist it until it looks like a cinnamon bun. 3. Get someone to help you with this step: With your shirt in a cinnamon bun form, get the other person to tie a rubber band around it to keep that shape. 4. Now, use spray paint to color your shirt. 5. Let it dry, wash, and presto!

Use batik wax to draw the image, dye, dye, dye (sorry got into ex g/f mode) and then use news paper on both sides and a hot iron to melt the wax into the paper. Be careful, melt don't burn!!

Try masking tape I once had some work uniforms that I would dye to keep the color vibrant but they had lettering the top I would put masking tape or duct tape and the color never clashed.
I hope it works for you.

If it is made out of metal then coat it with wax. That will protect it and be easily removed afterwards.
If it is wood then I'd consider plastic wrap but it might leak.
