Gosh, why do some responders have to be so rude when replying??? It's simply not called for. Anyway, my honest answer is that I don't like Oonagh too much. I love the meaning, but phonetically, I was pronouncing it "Oo-nog" before you explained it. I happen to have one of those "hard" names, so I go around using my middle name most of the time to cut down on confusion, and it always seems like such a hassle, from Starbucks, to customer service calls...it's rough. And not to mention kids are just SO cruel these days...so I wouldn't want to subject my child to ridicule so early on. But if the name just speaks to you, I like the suggestion from a few others to switch it to Lucy Oonagh.

Choose neither. Why? Because their negatives will be the reason why you will break up with whoever you choose, and then you'll find someone else that you should have been in the first place. The father of your child - he cheated on you, hit you, and drinks. Those are 3 things that ended my parents' marriage...and if you marry him, down the road you will realize it wasn't worth it. His bipolar disorder is NO reason for him to hit anyone and he might end up using that against you all the time. The other dude - if he loves your baby then he shouldn't hate her name...much less want to go as far as changing it. It's the little things in life that counts, and when you hate someone's name it's one of those things that you should NEVER mention. Way I see it, that's just the start. What's next; is he going to change your name? Change the way you dress? Change the way you walk? Change the way you talk? Change who your friends are? Change your religion? You sound insecure and want to jump into something you don't understand. You are better than that, your daughter is better than that and you should just wait a bit til someone better comes along. You are right; you need to find a father figure for your daughter. But you also need to find someone who is a great husband and a great friend.

I love it. I went to school with an Oonagh and she was the sweetest girl. For the people who said that she would be teased for her name. It is the person that gets teased, not the name. If a child is going to be picked on they will be no matter what you name them. Give her a name you love, teach her about love and that she is loved above all and she will be alright. I have a Johann and a Kasmira, their names are mispronounced sometimes and misspelled, but they like their names and are confident children. And the reactions I get from the general public are great.

You can name her however you want cause its your baby so you really shouldn't care what anyone else thinks. Just think of this: Isn't Oonagh going to make your baby's life complicated? I mean remember she'll have to be called her name by people that don't know how to pronounce it everywhere and she'll be called oh nag! or ouunaa or any funny thing her classmates can come up with, plus she'll always have to clarify the spelling and they'll always get her name wrong. If you can live with that then by all means name your baby that name you fell in love with.
(which is not so bad any ways...my name is Waleska and I love it cause its unique, brings lots of male attention ;) lol although I've been called every name there could possibly be that sounds remotely like Waleska which is pronounced Valeska by the way)
Good luck and let us know what you decide.

First off, congrats on the little girl. Secondly, I love lucy, and third i think that Oonagh is going to be hard for people to not only spell but pronounce as well. what about Aiden (AY-den) lucy or vice versa.
here is a site for help if you decide to look at other names:

I think the name Oonagh is beautiful ! It's so unique and has a nice ring to it. The only thing i'd consider doing is maybe changing the Lucy part as it doesn't quite go with Oonagh. Good job though, and congratulations ! -=)

I love the Lucy part, but not so much Oonagh. I think kids and teachers will have a really hard time with it when she starts school. Maybe you can reverse them so that is her middle name, that way you get the name that you love but it won't be so awkward for her as a child.

It has lots of possibilities, so I like it. 1. It has a legitimate history. 2. You have the "Lucy" back up. 3. It sounds good as one long name, "Oonagh Lucy." 4. The girl might really like "Oonagh." Look at Uma and Darma. :) Just make sure the hospital spells it right, mama.

I like the sound of it, but not the look of it...Oo-na is quite nice when you say it out loud, but you read it and it and you are reminded of something a cave person would utter in a comic...
Perhaps you could spell it a bit different to make it less cave-man like?
I'm Swedish and live in Australia and decided to name my first child after a goddess in Norse mythology - because I too wanted to impart something of her heritage into her name. The Goddess name was Fröja (there are stacks of alternative spellings for this name: Freja, Freia, Froya, Friia, Frija, Frøya, Fröa, Reija and so on), but we decided to go with the Englified version Freya instead so people wouldn't struggle with her name (or the spelling)...
I have to echo most of the other people who has answered this question. What seems like a great idea when they are tiny totts can become quite difficult for the child when they grow older.
