Okay, Jack Sparrow is the only character I really liked that he played. And you forgot about the dude he played in Secret Window, he was just weird then. But as for your question, I think it's because he has the ability to look just a little bit crazy. In all the roles I've seen him in he always plays the one who's either crazy or just plain different. Scissorhands: different. Willy Wonka: crazy and different. Secret Window dude: just plain nuts. And Jack Sparrow: just crazy enough to be a true pirate.

Alot of it is working with Tim Burton, who does different (and fun) stuff. But I think he enjoys a challanging role. Finding Neverland , What's Eating Gilbert Grape, Chocolat, and Benny&Joon were a bit more on the "normal" side, I suppose, but a little more out there than usual.

Even as a younger actor he was afraid of being type-cast for certain roles. I.E., he didn't want to be "stuck" in the same type of role for the rest of his career, he wanted to branch out and show what he could do. The "weird" parts you're describing actually require more acting talent and a broader skill base than most others.

Because he is a fantastic actor and likes to "stretch" his abilities. I cannot imagine anyone else playing Jack Sparrow - he's awesome in those movies.

because, my lad, johnny always plays a great psychotic freak. it would have been queer to see him as Tom Cruise in War of the Worlds, or some other dramatic role. No, psychotic roles fit him better. but i find it disturbing that girls find him handsome, i mean, he's weird lookin'! but I loved him as Captian Jack. That was a piece of work.

He likes them b/c they are unique. He recently said in an interview that Jack Sparrow, was the "spawn" of his ideas that made the character unique and fun and that nobody else would have thought of play him that way.
