I am not a techi but my husband is in IT so please excuse my lack of tech language. As my husband explained it to me. The more information in a computer the less longer it takes for the computer to find the information it needs. Every program takes up more space and even if you uninstall there are always left over files on the computer. There are many ways to get back some of the speed such as taking off unused programs and deleteing temporary files and cookies . Putting pictures and large files on CDs or disks instead of your hard drive. Having a good anti spyware and Ad-ware program and defragmenting regularly.
But there is only one way to get it back to the way it was when you got it and that is to Format and only install absoluetly the most basic programs. And to stay away from internet downloads unless you absolutely need to.

Several things can slow down the speed. Try "defragmenting" hard drive. (might help). If files become scattered, they need to be degfragmented to group the parts closer together again. Also Go to Ad-adaware and download the Free adware program that removes adware. Also You might want to download, Spybot Search and Destroy, which will remove spyware. Spyware and Adware can slow down your system as well. Do a search to locate both. They are free to download. (They do have a version that you can pay for as well)
How much RAM is installed. If you have install additional applications on your system, you might have to upgrade(install more RAM) because programs are becoming larger now and require more RAM to run. You problem could be several things. Hope some of these helped.

get rid of all the unneccesery programs you have "Games maybe, or media players like Jet Audio /real player /winAmp if you have any of them", and off corse delete all your temp files, and be sure that you've deleted all of them even the hidden ones, you can do that by searching for "*.tmp" and then "TEMP", with enabling the "search hidden files and folders / search subfolders /and search system folders" in the More advanced options in your search window, (If you have the windows XP, if not these options wouldn't be that deferent).
Every day and the other.
this step may get your speed a bit higher.
If it didn't then try uninstalling the programs you previously installed on your [C: ] drive and then reinstalling them on a deferent drive, that should boost the speed right up 70% or higher.
windows always needs a free space on the hard drive to use as RAM.
If all that didn't help, then you have the following choise:
go to your "My Computer" icon, right click on it and click on properties, then advanced, click in Performance on "settings", then advanced again, then in the Virtual Memory click "change", and set the drives you want windows to use their free space as RAM, then enter a number between 0 ~ 4000 in the Intial Size (MB), and a number between 0 ~ 4095 in the Maximum Size (MB), but take it from me it's not neccesery to enter a large number, be careful with those numbers they can do the opposite.
If nothing Wored Or you had problems call me, I may have other ways to boost the Speed for you.

Get a good spyware and antivirus program (i use trend micro pc cillin and webroot spysweeper) and sweep it anyways. If that does not help, look into a RAM upgrade. You can have a best buy do it for 39 plus the RAM cost. Or find someone who has done it before Just like a car, you have to spend money to keep your computer running well.

Your hard drive always needs to be formatted with at least 1 partition. If you bought it new, that should have already been done. The only time you have to partition a hard drive is if you upgrade to a new one yourself. Try cleaning your temporary files and run a defrag on your hard drive.

Get Yahoo Toolbar and run the (free) anti-spy feature. Adware, spyware can slow down your Window computer. This is one reason that I prefer Mac computers.
