for one... you're not supposed to live off minimum wage, its a starting wage, or training wage, and you ARE supposed to work more than 40 hours a week.minimum wage is for beginners, teens, and retired people who already have an income, but want or need a little extra money. You were never supposed to be able to raise a family of 4 by flipping burgers your whole life. why can't democrats, and some republicans understand this?

Unfortunately, whether or not minimum wage is designed as a entry wage for trainees and teenagers or not, the reality is that state by state wages in most categories are tied to minimum wage.

Some jobs are not lost due to raising the minimum.

For example, Walmart does not pay the same wage across the continent.

Mississippi employees do not earn the 11 dollar an hour minimum that they do in Calgary Canada, even allowing for the exchange rate.

Employers have to pay whatever it takes to get employees.

So Walmart and McDonald's and their ilk don't close up shop when the minimum wage increases.

Basic factory labour, farm labour, close down or hire fewer people. The owner has the option of moving the business somewhere they can earn a greater profit.

When done on a large scale it is called outsourcing.

Low minimum wages are the reality if you do not want to lose even more jobs to the third world.

Because Americans are not interested in paying twice as much for cars, computers and plastic Star Wars toys just so they can by American.

Democrats take their votes disproportionately from people who earn middle to low wages, and idealistic elites like artists and rock stars. Republicans get their votes from small business owners and working middle classes, thus the differences in priority.

Democrats understand, they just pretend not to in order to garner the support of their constituents.

You have to be kidding. Obviously you have never been laid off or been put out of work by downsizing. There was a time when there were good jobs for everyone who wanted to work. In many parts of the country all our jobs have been transferred over seas because of cheap labor and big business making astronomical profits. Hard working Americans lose their jobs and then have to feed their families and pay for the houses they live in and the only jobs available are minimum wage. I guess we should kill our children or commit suicide so we don't become a burden to all the brainwashed civic minded individuals who have never had this happen to them. The sad part is you or some one in your family will probably become a victim and see what it is like on the other side of the fence. Unlike you I do not wish that on anyone. Next thing you will tell me this has no effect on crime because you would never steal to feed your family if you had to feed them. You make me sick and you are part of the problem because you have never even made an attempt to see how people less fortunate then you live.

Plus, the minimum wage also prices certain individuals OUT of jobs. It also lessens the amount of employees a company is looking to hire because due to the increase in the minimum wage (were it to occur) they'd have less capital to devote to hiring labor. All in all, we don't need to raise the minimum wage and you make a good case of why Democrats don't truly understand what they are talking about with this issue.

Can you please let all those minimum wage folks know how to go about getting more that min wage? Most people can't afford college to get a higher paid job. And second of all most of the so called min. wage jobs puts food on your table. About 75% people in this county were not born with a silver spoon in their mouth so they must live the American dream the hard why, with good old fashion hard labor.

But excuse me, if I remember it correctly, it was during a democratic president's terms that the government had a surplus and it is now, with a republican president in the white house that the U.S. is the deepest red in the history of the country. and by the way, because of all the Republicans' cuts from education and other enrichment programs, the students who enter the work force would have to expect earning not much more than minimum wages because of the low quality education (yeah, that include" no child left behind")they received that they can not compete with the rest of the world.

The same reason over half the county doesn't understand basic economics. It's hardly a simple subject, and the interactions get pretty convoluted. Plenty of Republicans like to ignore the parts they don't like, too.

If more than half the people understood 'basic' economics, then how did so many people get so deeply in credit card debt ?? How can >anyone< use one of those 'payday loan' places ?? Why not just volunteer for debtors prison and get it over with ??

Because they do not care. Most of them were rich before they got into office and never had to really work in their lives. They are only concerned about voting themselves a pay raise every time they start a new session and making money off of lobbyists. Each party has members who do this....Take the Kennedys for example....family made money off of Prohibition and they have never done anything but be rich and politics...so they do not know about the average American...never let them fool you most politicians don't....

Democrats dont seem to understand basic anything, except basic Bush bashing. They think raising taxes will balance the budget? It wont, all it does is send us into an eventual recession. Hell i'm not a great economist and I know that.

They understand. They choose to ignore these facts in favor of currying favor with their "base", which is slowly eroding BTW. You've got to convince victim...er...voters that you are their friends so you can stay in power. Republicans aren't much better. Pandering is as pandering does. Or something like that.
