I was just wondering..what if you were under a sun umbrella, not sun hitting on you, however..it was extremely hot that day. Are you still able to get a tan from the heat?! w/o having the sun hit on u?

An umbrella will not keep all sun rays off of you. Even in the shade you can get sunburned or tanned, although shade does provide a lot of protection. So yes, under shade you can still get a tan.

The answer to your question is no.
If you stay under an umbrella you will not darken.
however if you get up and down and go in and out from under the umbrella
the time when you are out and about you are getting direct exposure.
If you stay in the shade you do NOT tan. you may sweat but any darkening is because you were out from under the umbrella more than you realized.

Being in the heat will not give you a tan. Its like walking in the sun in long sleeves. Only year face and neck tans. Not your arms.

Under the sun or nothing the Ultra Violet rays darken the skin.

Wow man, it is really hot ! We had our holidays there and at times it was hotter than the UK in july. If you are thinking of going there, you will need factor 10 sun cream or even higher. The beaches are great, but it is one hell of a long walk to the sea when the tide is out.

Once when it was cloudy I got a bad burn so I am sure you can tan without being in the direct sun.

U can actually get tanned even on cloudy days...it's not the heat, it's the UV rays. I love laying out on cloudy days because it's not as hot & U don't get all sweaty & yucky.

heat energy is not enough to chage the orientation of the pigment molecules in your skin so that they appear darker. You need intense light (ultra violet) radiation to do that.
