Man oh man. What a can of worms question this is. My personal opinion is all I can give as there is no definitive way that this can ever be proven. The most popular drummer would be easy but the best.... wow. Dave Weckl is unbelievable. He is an insane technician!!! Vinnie Colliuta has the technical chops of Dave Weckl with a groove to die for. Simon Phillips is jaw dropping. Steve Gadd has a feel that is sooo smooth it makes you happy. Peter Erskine, John Robinson, oh man I'm drooling just thinking of all the hot cats out there. My personal favorites of the Rest in Peace crew would be #1: Jeff Porcaro- Toto, #2- John Bonham- Led Zeppelin #3 Buddy Rich. Best of luck. If you haven't had the privilege of hearing any of these guys I would recommend you check them out; I think you will be blown away, too!
