I have heard reports from some of my older friends/relatives that this is a neccesary safety precaution, but I have my doubts that it is simply paranoia. Is there any fact to this rumor, guys? Please give a source. Thanks.

get a good surge protector, or better yet an universal power supply. the latter is more expensive but much better for your power supply because it offers even power no matter what, and allows proper shutdown time during a power outage. as far as surge protectors go, spend 50 bucks and get a good one. a cheapo will not protect a normal surge on most computers. as far as whether or not this is a myth, it is most deffinately true, i know from experience. . . . . .

it's not neccesary, and nothing will happen, IF you have a lightning protector on your roof????.
that should make it imposible for the lightning to effect your electrecity, and accordingly not effecting your computer.

it's a fact, meanwhile your computer would not be harmed totaly by the lightning, the worst thing is that the power supply will short and burn......
that's off corse if you're not in contact with the copmuter, ????
Or else you would get the hit, and your computer wont feel a thing, and you must be in a hospital after that!!!..

I've had lightning burn out a modem before. Now I just use a good surge protector and don't worry about it.

Turn it off, but no need to unplug if you have a surge protector.

While it is not necessary, it's never a bad idea to err on the side of safety.
After all, while it SHOULDN'T happen, that doesn't mean that it won't. and I'd rather have my puter than a burnt out box on my desk.
But, that's your call.
