Harry Potter is a good book both for boys and girls. So are Artims Fowl and Narnia(CS Lewis).
C.S. Lewis, I love his other books as well. Like The Screwtape Letters.
Little Women by Louisa May Alcott is a great book for girls.

I suggest the classics! They are classic for a reason. Little House in the Big Woods, The Great Brain Series, Of Mice and Men, The Iliad, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Grapes of Wrath, Charlotte's Web, Little Women, Tom Sawyer, A Christmas Carol, The Scarlet Letter, Dracula, Frankenstein, A Tale of Two Cities, The Tell Tale Heart, or a hundred others! I also recommend Clan of the Cave Bear by J. Auel and the Xanth novels by Piers Anthony...
They rarely teach the classics in school anymore and so great epics are being lost to time... H.G. Wells and George Orwell will enrich a child and add insight into our very culture... Even books on ettiquete and old Sears catalogs can be fun for a young mind...
I wish I was a teen again and all these books were new! :)

Anything by Meg Cabot is good. She has The Princess Diaries series, 1-800-MISSING series, The Mediator series, All-American Girl, the sequel, Ready or Not, Teen Idol, Avalon, Queen of Babble, and dozens of others. There is also the books by Megan McCaffrety: Sloppy Firsts, Second Helpings, and Charmed Thirds. And for more heavy stuff, there is Tithe by Holly Black; that was pretty good but a little gothic dark, The Pendragon series, Harry Potter, House of the Scorpian, a real good book, and others. Hope you find something you like. Oh, and Amelia Atwater-Rhodes' books.

Cathy Clark is really good, she wrote Icing on the Lake which was a quick read. Rachel Hawthorne (Carribean Cruising, Island Girls and Boys, Thrill Ride) also writes quick reads. These are more "girly" romance books. Meg Cabot (Princess Diaries, Ready Or Not, All American Girl, etc) is also a very good teen lit writer.
The Au Pair series and Nanny series books are quick reads and "no brainers" as well as the Gossip Girls and Clique series.

If you're a girl, over 8 but under 18, I recommend "The Earth, My Butt, and other Big Round Things". It's awesome! Author is: Carolyn Mackler
My daughter read the whole thing to me aloud - we laughed our big round butts off! But it wasn't all funny - it WAS all good, though....
Also, "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" was great. Can't remember the author, but that should be easy enough to find.
