Mr Crowley,

Thanks for your question.

The Jesus and Mary Chain were hugely influential during their 15 years together between 1984 and 1999 in indie circles. Their debut album Psychocandy, along with the Cocteau Twins, largely influenced the British Shoegazing movement of the late 1980s as well as numerous American alternative rock bands. Other hugely influential acts, such as My Bloody Valentine, The Butthole Surfers and The Stone Roses cite the Jesus and Mary Chain as primary influences, and The Pixies covered "Head On" (from Automatic) on their album Trompe Le Monde.

The Mary Chain's influence remains to this day, an influence that has been confirmed by the numerous cover versions of Mary Chain songs. Contemporary bands such as The Raveonettes, Skywave, Alcian Blue and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club are heavily indebted to the influence of The Jesus and Mary Chain. However, it could be said that the Mary Chain's great legacy was the realization that punk rock/industrial noise was not diametrically opposed to pop melody, that the two could be woven together into music far more than the sum of its parts.

The Triple J network has a page on the Jesus and Mary Chain containing interviews and list of tracks. It is worth checking out.

I have every one of their cds. Did you know Rhino just re-released most of their Warner Brothers cds in DualDisc format? It's great, they sound better and have the videos etc etc.

Last year I was quite happy to reduce several emo boys to stunned silence and fear by introducing them to Psychocandy.

"Psychocandy" is a masterpiece, while "Honey's Dead" is also great if only because it has the track 'Sugar Ray.'
