Well, by virtue of the word "artificial," I doubt, very much, that would be an accurate analogy to the word "evolutionary." Both words are diametrically opposed.

Your poor word choice aside, I'm assuming your asking whether the next step in technology will be to create some sort of artificial intellegence, or in essence a computer that can think like a human. I believe this to be immpossible (at least for a very long time), when you look at the complexities of the human brain trying to recreate them becomes a daunting task, esspecially when we just unravelled the human genome. As far as it being our downfall if it were to be created it's like they always say there is no replacement for the human spirit. So no I don't think it would be our downfall.

Artificial Intelligence isn't a stage of evolution. It's a technological advancement. That's a big difference. Secondly, I don't believe so. Why would it?

"Artificial Intelligence" is just another description for mathematical constructs called "Neural Networks".

They can do pretty amazing things, but they are not really "intelligent" in the human creative sense.

They are being used in heart rate monitors, car engines, research, insurance, mining, and many many other fields.

The most exciting application for them will be domestic robots, if you ask me. Who knows where this is headed? Lets give it time.

Some of the answers here are really nutty though.

No, neither of those. It is a major jump in our ability to study the nature of knowledge, how information systems work in general and how learning takes place. There is a lot of knowledge that doesn't undo us. It's knowledge about things that explode that we need to watch out for. Knowledge about knowledge is supposed to be helpful.

Remember the line in Jurassic Park...the scientists were so focused on can they do it, they forgot to answer the question, should they do it.

Bad idea artificial intelligence.
