My car makes a rattling sound when slightly pushing the gas and going slow, then after driving for a few minutes, the oil light will come on when the car is stopped or at very low speeds and it begins to overheat. What is the problem? and any estimates of the repair costs? It is a 1995 Ford Taurus GL/SE!

The oil light detects low pressure, not low quantity. It is quite possible that you have a low pressure condition at low engine speeds even with the proper amount of oil. The cause could be a number of things such as bad oil pump, excessive bearing clearances, oil pump pickup clogged or damaged. The fact that you hear noise coming from the engine tells me that serious damage has already been done. Go to a qualified mechanic for an estimate. Don't be surprised to hear a fairly large number. Also, get in the habit of checking your oil, coolant level and tire pressure at every fill up. A lot can happen during the three months between oil changes.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but I,m afraid from your description that I probably will be.The oil light comes on to let you know that the engine oil pressure is dangerously low, and the rattling noise you hear is at least the engine lifters rattling or at worst a rod bearing noise.I recommend you not drive it anymore and have it checked out right away. You might be able to get by with replacing the oil pump to correct your low oil pressure problem but if it has not already done so it surely will damage the connecting rod bearings or even damage the crankshaft in which case you will have to replace the engine. Get it checked out immediately or you will most certainly ruin the engine the way it is.HURRY!!

i hate to be the bearer of bad news but does it have oil in it

and if so it could be an oil pump either going or gone

check your water level also not only for full but if there is any oil in it as this could be a possible cracked block or head

there is some hope if it is the oil pump you ar looking at arround $500.00 or less (i am guessing) but if it needs a head job or worse case senerio you are looking at a lot more

Could it be your cooling fan? This would cause your car's temp to start to overheat when stopped, but it would be OK at freeway speeds. I had this happen in a car once, and the fix was as simple as replacing the fuse for the cooling fan. Good luck!

Sounds like your main bearings are bad..
This will cause the rattle and also cause low oil pressure.

sounds like your car might need some oil. take it to the garage and have someone check the oil level.

BETTER HAVE YOUR OIL PUMP CHECKED, AND DON'T DRIVE THE CAR ANYMORE. YOU'LL BURN THE PISTON WALLS AND RINGS, THEN GOODBYE ENGINE......
