the major studios are: Universal, Warner Brothers, Walt Disney, Paramount, 20th Century Fox, Sony (Columbia)
the major independents are: DreamWorks, Miramax, the Weinstein Co., New Line, Revolution, Lion's Gate. - difference is they don't have a "studio lot" like the others.
MGM was just bought out (I think by Sony), Touchstone is part of Disney (same with Beuna Vista and Pixar)
