Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death. Kind of a joke now huh?

I think people are too scared, too stupid or both to realize that since the dawn of this country US patriots have fought against the very things Bush and Co. are doing. These Liberties were hard won and we basically just accept unwarranted spying, holding US citizens without due process in virtual concentration camps. We allow racist scapegoating to be the norm. Think about it, a governement that treats others violently and strips thier rights (free press etc.) as in Iraq, also typically acts the same way inwardly, towards its own people. We can clearly see that people in history have fought and died to preserve the rights that were taken away in the last 7 years. How did we let this happen? Why did we?

Thomas Jefferson once said: "The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants." That time is WAY overdue!

Like lobsters comfortably languishing in a pot of lukewarm water, Americans have become too lackadaisical about their freedoms and their rights as citizens to protect those freedoms. We accept whatever our scumbag politicians do, not realizing that as the pot starts to boil over, we will start screaming in agony over our own apathy. By then, it might be too late.

But, we're pre-occupied with such things as our maxxed-out credit cards; professional landscaping for our $300,000 homes; Britney Spears' love life; and $3.00-a-gallon fuel for our $60,000 SUVs. So we sit in the pot...and the politicians keep the heat at medium-to-low, turning it up ever so slightly so that we don't notice that they're little-by-little taking away our freedoms while they continue to suck off the taxpayers' teat. -RKO-

OMG, did you question the government? Prepared to be flayed by the 11 year olds who listen to their parents all the time and the 30 year olds that never cut the cord.
Yes, we are allowing our liberties to be stripped. Perhaps you and I aren't because we are writing to our congress persons, speaking out and working to educate our friends. However, many others are not stupid, but too busy working three jobs just to feed their families let alone afford medical care. When you are living hand to mouth its tough to really get involved in politics.
Meanwhile, our well fed fat friends (the close minded rich) are pulling the puppet strings, receiving HUGE tax refunds and controlling the topics in America.
We have two options, we can mobilize and get those who are working poor, tired of discrimination and ready for a change to work together with a consistent message to restore America to the country it was created as: The land of the FREE the home of the BRAVE. Those not afraid to speak out and have the government listen
OR, we can let the right win. Period. No more abortion, divorce, gays, affirmative action, health care for children, etc. Then when 90% of America is living in poverty, if they don't take away voting rights to anyone who isn't a white land owning male, we may be able to show that these non-issues are really non-issues. Maybe.
If "America" continues on this path, it won't be America anymore.

History is a funny thing. Regardless of the facts there are always three sides: my side, your side, and the truth. The truth about the "spying" you refer to is that it is not the first time that this type of tool has been used to gain information about our enemies in a time of conflict (I'll grant your fantasy about this not being a war...temporarily). Historically, this has happened during WWII and during other times of war that the US has been involved in. Detention of "citizens" also has historical precedent. Again, see WWII.

I'm not sure what "racial scapegoating" you are babbling about, but I will speculate that you mean Muslims. Well, the truth, again, is that the attacks here, in Iraq, in Israel, and in Russia (did you forget about the Muslims who shot the school kids in the back) and throughout Europe and the Middle East have been perpetrated by...Muslims. Now is that term that applies to a religion and not a "race" or nationality? Yes. So does that make it racial? No. It would be, if it were not true, bigotry at best.

I would challenge you to show me legitimately one "liberty" that has been breached or subjugated in the last 7 years. I will not be so intellectually snobbish as to say that you can't because I am always open to legitimate argument based on real fact. Until then, please put a cork in it.

Where's the proof? What U.S. citizens were held without due process? Traitors? You're right about that. They should have shot him for treason long time ago. Racist scapegoating? What does that even mean? A Black female is Secretary of State, before her it was a Black male. The Attorney General is a Mexican American...What are you talking about? You don't think trying to find out terrorism's next move is warranted? I guess that's why Clinton take Bin Laden when he had the chance-s. The ones that are taking away the rights that my uncle, for example, died for are liberals like the ACLU. He would be ashamed at how what YOU people have done to the country.

What liberty have YOU been denied?

You think you've been denied freedom of the press? Don't make me laugh! No Right is absolute, and freedom of the press does NOT mean that the press can disclose classified information without legal consequence.

During WW II the Chicago Tribune disclosed that we had broken the Japanese code. President Truman was preparing to send the Marines to seize the paper and SHUT IT DOWN, but then it became apparent that the Japanese had missed the story. The ONLY reason that paper was not closed down, is that the action would have drawn attention to the story.

Funny but I feel just as free now as I did then. I do remember Bill Clinton trying to curb the second amendment when he was in there but I don't remember losing any rights under the current administration. Of course, I am not a terrorist combatant either. Perhaps if I was a fighter for a terrorist cause, I would be worried that my phones might be tapped now. Or that I might end up in Gitmo with no country wanting me to be sent to them. But since I am just a normal US citizen who actually LIKES that my government is listening to terrorists on the phone and who actually LIKES that terrorists are off the streets and in Gitmo, I am not all that worried about it.

Well yea, we were pretty stupid to do that. Now we can't fight to preserve a damn thing, or we go to jail, or get charged for some new made up crime. We sat blindly by, and let them pass all these new laws, chipping away at our freedom over every one of them....it's disgusting and outrageous, and then we sit here, with our hands tied, wondering what in the hell we can do about it now?

And I do not have the answers to that one either.

I guess in a nutshell we were all too busy with our every day lives, that we just let it all slip by unoticed, thinking it *was for the best* because *they* told us it was.

Nobody wants to be ridiculed as "unpatriotic" and this is what the right-wingers do, accuse people of being anti-American when they voice their opinions. It didn't start working well until after Sept. 11. It's a dirty underhanded trick to silence the voice of reason, but it seems to be working. Judging by the flack you are taking for asking this question, I would say it is working better than I thought, its kinda scary actually.

Check out what Herman Goering had to say about how the Nazi party got the German people to side with them before WWII it might open your eyes to what this current US regime is doing today.
Now I will sit back and read whet all of the out of control conservatives have to say about this issue.
