It's a good idea to research the company online and find out information about them that way. In a recent interview, I asked the interviewer, "How do your plans for this new tourist attraction reflect the rich heritage of this particular building?" When I interviewed at a tanning salon I asked, "What precautions do you take to protect your customers from excessive or dangerous sun exposure?"

If I'm interviewing for a job and I get a really bad impression of the company, sometimes I ask questions just to throw them off. For example, if I'm told I have to wear a uniform, I might ask, "Do you adhere to the Manitoba Employee Rights Act by providing laundry service for the required uniform?" Although laundry service is required by law, it is commonly overlooked, so like to make them sweat the small stuff.

It depends on the company, size of the company, etc. You should have at least 3-5 questions in your head, so if they are not covered in the interview, you can bring them out. Usually professional development is a fairly safe area: "In what ways to you promote professional development in your employees?" Something like that, but probably only for the bigger companies. You should do a google search, there are tons of resources for this question.

for hiring someone.
2. What challenges do you see for this position.
3. What opportunities do you see for this position.

What's your turnover rate? i.e., do people leave frequently, or have most employees been here a while?

Another one to ask the interviewer is, "If you were me interviewing for a job at your company, what's the most important thing I should know about?"
