It is totally bizarre, but then you remember that celebrities are just people doing a job, they are actors. People from all walks of life are susceptible to destructive cults, indeed Scientology has been doing it now for over 50 years...
Scientology has a well practised form of recruitment often referred to as "hard sell" that has duped many people into joining.
Also celebrities see a different part of scientology to most members, going to a special Celebrity Center. Obviously Celebrities also have a lot of what Scientology want, money.
Hubbard actually made celebrities a "quarry" to be "hunted", because of the endorsement & PR they bring to an organisation:

Here is an article on why people might join scientology, celebrities join for the same reasons:
http://www.clambake.org/archive/personal_story/funkydonny.html
This is a good statement I think from a critic of scientology that explains why:
"CoS has always given special attention to celebrities because of their enormous marketing value. For this they have Celebrity Centers where celebrities receive special attention, and where potential rising stars are recruited into the cult. Are these people personally more successful in life than ordinary people? I guess that depends on what you treasure in life and how you measure success.
There is no doubt that Scientology has techniques that attract some people, with their method of psychotherapy and group thinking. Most Scientologists know little about the dark side of CoS. This especially applies to the celebrities who only see the glamorous side. In the case of the names mentioned I will try to avoid speculations about their personal reasons to stay in CoS; one can only assume they believe what they profess. But having talent in an art or being successful in a craft does not imply they have to be smart or are less likely to become victims of fraud. Things like talent, good looks and circumstances play an important role in why some become celebrities, especially in Hollywood. I do not believe Scientology celebrities are happier or personally more successful than most ordinary people, even though they might have achieved some level of public success. It seems to me that they struggle with the same problems as everybody else.
Celebrities are under a great deal of stress and public pressure, and often have a good deal of money to hand. Scientology may be to them what gangs are to poor inner-city youths: a way to find someone that cares about them. Scientology Celebrity Centers etc. give them a closed world where they can relax and find someone to talk to. The expensive courses don't hurt them much, and Hubbard even said that celebrities should not be charged but only asked to donate what they wanted to donate. They might sample it just for the heck of it, and stay in. After all, they can easily afford to do so. There have also been speculations about tax benefits for celebrities who remain members of CoS, implying the possibility of economic motives.
In addition, the cult has huge files on members with all their most personal confessions from auditing sessions. CoS has a history of using these files against defectors to either force them back or into silence. Many may not be in a situation where they can quit."

Because he was fooled into thinking that this man, L. Ron Hubbard, a decent Science Fiction writer, had the answers that he was looking for. It's a response to the need to be a part of something greater than oneself. Something that is new, different, and holds the possibility that it is right, and the rest of the world is wrong. Therefore, when it's proven, he will look like a very smart dude, ya know? "Hey, I knew this all along! You guys just catching up?" The reality is, however, that imo, he has been misguided, and led to believe Scientology is real. That the rest of us, all 6 billion (well, most of us, ok... most of us) believe in God, in one form or another. How can that many people be wrong? I mean, even if one tiny aspect is right (like, He prefers to be called Allah, for instance, or He prefers to be called Lord....) in one religion, and wrong in another, they are all mostly the same, when we are talking about worshiping God. Also, Tom has some issues that he needs to work out with a good therapist or psychologist, or psychiatrist. He has an inferiority complex, stemming from his height, I think, and he has a need to be number one, and control all things in his world. Sad, too, because unless Katie can get him to see the light, the poor guy is in for a rude awakening, huh?

He was a hopeless drug addict and hit rock bottom, and those of scientology did not abandon him. They offered friendship when the rest of family, friends, and associates abandoned him (as he felt they did). They counseled him and brought him off of the bottom he had reached. I saw an interview where he was promoting scientology. He said that scientology gave him his life back, that they saved him. He said that no one could ever convince him that it wasn’t real, because he experienced it and it definitely was real.
That is what all cults use to recruit their prospects. They give them a sense of belonging. Every religion, including atheism uses the same techniques, but most still leave them empty and searching for more. That is why Jim Jones convinced all those poor deceived souls to drink poison, the Bebop comet cult self mutilated themselves and then committed suicide to ride the spacecraft in the comet’s tail, Mohammad convinced an entire race of people to leave a pagan polytheism to convert to his newly invented religion called Islam. That is how a confused Joseph Smith invented his fantastical book of Mormon from set golden scriptures that nobody else has ever seen to know that they exist.
That is how the Catholic Church and her daughters sold their indulgences to sin and their polytheism they try to call monotheism, causing the children of the Lord to commit spiritual fornication (idolatry) and adultery (false doctrines).
That is how the Watch Tower Society convinces lonely unlearned souls that they are monotheistic but in reality they are more polytheistic than the Catholic Church. This comes from trying to explain a monotheistic God with a polytheistic carnal mind.
That is how the Campbellites convince so many that it is a sin to not go to church on Saturday and to eat bacon.
You should be getting the point by now.

Courses on communication, studying, fighting peer-pressure, shaking drugs, self-confidence, and generally how to feel good about your life without relying on someone else for it...
****, he is an actor in Hollywood. That stuff is all perfect for them. Compare any of the ones that did it with the other hollywood people and Im not sure why you would even ask the question.
