Life is the factor that allows the classification of something as alive or dead. But in philosophical terms, life is what you make it. Life ties all human beings together, so it's important. In other words, just go sky-diving. That's life.

philosophical terms you mean? Life can have a number of meanings. You can mean life as in the nature of living organisms, or you can mean life as in "what's the meaning of life" and the question of existence. Science can't use things beyond itself to define things, so the best Science can say for existence is existence...

As for the other answer, life is traditionally associated as being a series of chemical processes that develop into organisms that experience growth... it's something of a sticky issue though. Bacteria are alive, but what about a virus? It may seem like the same rules should apply, but for a variety of reasons, some scientists feel differently on the issue... then again, my information is from my High School biology class, which was years ago. There's probably a concensus by now.
