The question is why aren't there more female director students?
I think there are less female directors primarily because there isn't much call for their slant on movies. Take Drew Barrymore and the no guns on Charlies Angles thought. If she weren't the producer that idea would have never been accepted. And really it comes down to what the producers are willing to pay for. Are they willing to pay for a woman's perspective on say a horror picture or an action flick? I don't think so.
So you have two reasons. There aren't that many women starting out on that course and those that do are selling a product nobody wants to pay for.
And the big money is in the blockbusters.
