It will say do not disconnect until you "unmount" it properly.

Mac users: Click the Eject button next to the iPod icon in the iTunes Source list, or drag the iPod icon from the Desktop to the Trash (if you set your iPod for use as a hard disk). When you see your iPod menus again, you can safely disconnect your iPod from your computer.

Windows users: Click the Eject button next to the iPod icon in the iTunes Source list, or open My Computer, right-click on the iPod icon, and click Eject on the shortcut menu (if you set your iPod for use as a hard disk). When you see your iPod menus again, you can safely disconnect your iPod from your computer.

You just need to eject it. Your iPod will always say that until you eject it. Go into iTunes, look next to your iPod symbol and hit the eject button.

this was my 1 serious answer for the day, so use it wisely.

Good luck!

If your iTunes says it is done downloading songs on your iPod it is okay to unplug. Mine does this all the time.
