On the face of it Jeopardy appears to require a more high-brow contestant while Wheel of Fortune seems to favor the flamboyant over the studious; but is this merely a combination of casting and branding? Which requires more innate intelligence to succeed?

Actually, I think that Wheel of Fortune probably requires a higher IQ than Jeopardy. Jeopardy is about memorizing facts, whereas Wheel of Fortune is about pattern recognition. Most IQ tests are pattern recognition tests.

Oh please.
I have tried out for both "Jeopardy" and "Wheel," and the test for Jeopardy is 100 times harder. (I passed both.)

In case you think I am just bad at "Wheel," I was on the show in 1991 and won a trip plus $2500, and 3 of the 4 puzzles.

However, having been through both audition processes, I can tell you that "Wheel" is definitely looking for energy and excitement over visible intelligence. I clapped very loudly using my entire arm each friggin' hundredth time they asked for applause during the auditions - all four demented rounds over two days.

So you're right, it's all about casting. At the core, these shows are all about entertainment, after all!

Jeopardy needs a higher IQ. (IQ is different from intelligence. IQ is a measure of how easily you learn new things. Intelligence is how much you know)

People with low IQ's can still solve puzzles, some quite easily. (There's a guy in England who can't count to 3, but who can play how, say, a Mozart song would sound if Souza had written it. He can do it on the fly without practising)

I would say Jeopardy, because you need to know a lot more for those questions than you need to know for Wheel of Fortune. For Wheel of Fortune, all you need to do is basically guess a letter and hope it is up there if the puzzle just began.
