Read the history and you'll have a better understanding of what's going on. And don't pay attention to superficial news reports or pictures of dead people in the papers.
Israel has been trying to get rid of Hezbollah, by both peaceful, diplomatic and military means, for 20 years. They've asked Lebanon to take responsibility. They've brought in the UN. They've taken over southern Lebanon. And yet, nothing changes.
Hezbollah knows this and when they decided to commit a provoking act they knew what the response was going to be. Israel, which, again, has been trying to deal with Hezbollah for 2 decades, decided this was the time to act in force.
Israel's beef is NOT with Lebanon except to the extent that Lebanon has failed to take responsibility for terrorists operating within their borders. It is with Hezbollah. Israel has tried to make this clear from the outset but of course the uninformed or those not willing to see the deeper picture still ask why Israel is "attacking Lebanon."
A better question to ask is why has Hezbollah picked this time to provoke a fight? And, why does Hezbollah carry on without consideration for the impact that their actions have on their neighbors inside Lebanon?
One Palestinian farmer complaining about Hamas said recently that when terrorists launch missiles at Israel from his farm they might as well point them at him, because he is the one who gets the brunt of the response. The same can be said for Lebanon and Hezbollah: the latter is holding the former hostage.

Based on Israeli intelligence, Hezbollah has amassed over 13,000 missiles and counting. So much so that they now have a storage problem. Israel also suspected that some of these missiles are more sophisticated and reportedly could even reach as far as Tel Aviv. Add to this the fact that Iran is in the process of making nuclear weapons, thus they are now really worried these weapons might get into the Hez hands. So when Hez got into his favorite pastime or "misdemeanor" once again, this time Israel decided enough is enough and said "Let's find out how many rockets the Hez really has and how far these could be fired into Israel. Better we know now that Iran has not yet succeeded in producing nukes. Besides, we will be helping the Hez with their missiles storage problem."

Israel was attacked by Hezbollah and Hamas simultaneously at the direction of Iran and with the aid of Syria. If you lived on a border and rockets were coming into your back yard, I bet you would want something done about it too.
Iran is testing the situation and deflecting attention from the nuke stuff. The Lebanese are victims. Of course they should have done more to prevent Hezbollah from feeling comfortable enough to do this in the first place and really should be more in control of their country, but most of the Lebanese just want peace.

If residents of Quebec Canada were sneaking across the US border capturing US soldiers with the nation of Canada turning a blind eye to it, would the US have a right to respond?
See the link for "Why Israel's Reaction is Right" as written in Germany's Der Spiegel (of all places).
