It depends on the species of butterfly. Some live only a few days, other can live up to six months or longer.

Some species hibernate over Winter (eg: Mourning Cloak and Compton Tortoiseshell). Others migrate to warmer areas during Winter then fly back in the Spring (Monarch butterflies do this)

The average lifespan for an adult butterfly is 20 to 40 days. Some species live no longer than three or four days; others may live up to six months.

A few weeks on average. It also depends on whether or not they migrate. I think the ones that migrate live significantly shorter lives. It could be the other way around someone may want to check on that.
