different IP You will need to connect a router to your cable modem and connect your pcs to the router, you will need to contact your ISP to let them know what you are doing and they can lend whatever assistance you might need.
If any old IP could connect then anyone with a cable modem could get access for free.
With a router attached the cable modem will only see the router IP and any computers connected to the router will have access.

need a bit more info - but
need to do a few checks on your laptop
does it connect the same way?
is it on a network?
try these things first when connected
click start then run - type ipconfig
it should give you a ip address and a default gateway ip address
if it say local area connection unplugged thentry uninstalling your network card
type ping then the address of each of these - do you get a reply - from 1 or both - if so you may have to try settings on you firewall - this may be blocking it - also the addresses should be different
also ping 127.0.0.1 - this will test to see if youe TCP/IP setting are ok - do this reply - if not then you will have to reset the winsock
type (if you have win xp service pack 2) netsh winsock reset
give this a try
hope this helps but networking is a complecated thing - just given you the main points there maybe other things to do - but these above can sort out most things

Your router has to have a wireless access point and your laptop needs wireless capabilities in order to connect to the wireless access point on your router. After that, depending on the type of connection, you'll either need to enter a WEP key (which is usualy a serial number on the bottom or the router) or you should be able to simply connect if you are on an unsecured home network. please provide more information next time. thanks and good luck

Your laptop is probably broken or the signal is low. Try replugging if you use a router. If it is wireless, check the signal. If it is low, that probably is the problem.
