Lawrence Taylor didnt change football, he changed linebacking and it was because of the 3-4 that he was that good. I would have to say that there is no definite best defensive player because tackles aren't put into stats. Top 5 defensive players though would have to include Ray Lewis (intensity), Dick Butkus (brutality), Mike Singletary (determination), Deion Sanders (creativity), and Rod Woodson (consistency). Also I know my personal favorite, Zach Thomas, has close to 1600 tackles, which might be up there if there was a record.

dick lane the night train was the epitome of a football player in case you didn't know his record of 14 picks in a season are still an NFL record and he was just a rookie he also would tackle and cover he was a feared hitter from any position let alone from the corner position where his coverage skills were outstanding even though i think dieon sanders was as good as it gets as far as covering wideouts he lacked the tackling to be the best ever sorry dieon covering great receivers (rice , rison ) 2 Superbowl's 2 world series and the only man to score a touchdown and hit a home run in the same week night train is my choice for the best defender ever

Dick Butkus stands above all others--no defensive player dominated the sport more in their era than him. An award was created after him in college and the pros, he is a linebacker god.
A case can be made for any of these:
Lambert
Ronnie Lott
Lawrence Taylor
Reggie White
Mike Singletary
Deion Sanders
and I'm sure I'm forgetting many others

Rod Woodson? hmmmmm i never knew that the same player aka Rod Woodson, who led the NFL in Pass intereference penalties with the 49ers is the BEST EVER IN THE HISTORY of the NFL??? come on we knows hes a hall of famer but dont waste our time dumbass!! Brian Cox?? someone has a crackhead for a mother. Lawerence Taylor is definitely a legitimate answer and Ronnie Lott dominated way more than Rod Woodson buddy!

John Randle. He has the most sacks for an interior lineman in NFL history. I dont have his stats on me but they were impressive. Also he really intimidated his opponents with his smacktalk, and that helps. P.S. What is wrong with the people above me? Reggie White was a DE not a DT lol.

I'm with areosmith and oletex on this one. I'm leaning Reggie White even though he imploded when he opened is mouth off the field.
Butkus. Mike Singletary. I don't know how to pick between them but...
Jack Lambert is the greatest Steeler!!!!!!! Pure nasty.
"If you show me a good loser, I'll show you a loser!" And that was Jack at age 11. Heh.
