They don't have to. Its been tradition that goes back centuries. I've seen many women in modern day marriages that do not change their last name or they hyphenate it.

The tradition of changing the women’s surname is NOT a sexist idea. That is such a fool thing to say or even think. It was done to unify families and WAY back in time, the wife would move in with the husbands family. That household was then referred to the “Williams’ house” It is so simple.

Also, like many above have said. The woman nowadays does not have to change her name.

I remember asking this question when I was about 9 years old, and I remember my father chuckling.

I understand it now. It doesn't bother me. However, I'm married and I haven't changed my name. I didn't get married until I was almost 40, so it just seemed like too much of a hassle to change my name. However, with a child on the way, I think that socially, I will be called by my husband's name. I would like to have the same name as my child, but I don't think I'm going to bother with the legalities. I'd have to change my passport, my credit cards, my banking info. It makes me tired just thinking about it.

some women don't change their last name when they get married - and some put that hyphen between their maiden and married names. Why would men change their names - unless they had a real lame last name.

No law requires this any longer. Tradition is that she leaves her home to "join him in his home" and becomes a member of his family. She takes on the family name. Many other cultures don't follow this western tradition.

Hundreds of years of tradition. Legally, you don't have to, if I understand correctly.
