I know exactly what you're going through. I'm 43 and I went through a lot of that type of thing in my late 30s. And I was hideously lonely as well.

I'm a virtual outcast as an atheist. I strongly disagree with every religion as well. I am lucky that I have an atheist husband as well (formerly Catholic educated but atheist for YEARS), so I have him as a foundation.

Please don't feel that life offers you nothing... just because you don't have religion does NOT mean you have nothing in your life.
That's exactly what the Christians what us to feel, so just build a bridge and get over that frame of mind right now.

You have the opportunity to get involved with many political and ethical organizations to get the secular message out there, keep speaking out and standing up for a non-religious country. We don't want to rid the world of religion, but we do want our equal say and we don't want the religious folk to think THEY are the ones who are persecuted.

Find support groups online... there are many atheistic and secular humanist websites that have growing communities at which you can lurk for awhile, see what people are talking about, then get involved when you feel comfortable.

Check to see if there is a local atheist group (at meetup.com or other website) and see if they are active. Get involved with other people who think like you and it will be MUCH easier.

There are also many atheists active on Yahoo! 360, so look around there.

Chin up... you're not alone.

I do not see the connect between being a society outcast & your need to put out your feelings about religion you "know" of. If you're being who you are at this moment is not making you happy, why wouldn't you consider that creating some changes in your life may be a challenge in making a better person of you & others around you? Compromise & Understanding are worthy virtues to acquire...especially if you want to go back to waking up as a child...Yeah! The sun's out, who cares what time it is, let's see who's up & ready to play?

Then create your own belief system. I have done that. Find the best of each religion from standard Christianity (which has some good points to it), Judaism, Islam, Buddahism, Wicca, various other pagan beliefs, CAW, Scientology, New Age stuff, etc. Take the best, and disgard the rest. Create your own ethics system that fits with the sort of person you wish to be. THEN, start finding your own community. Don't be judgemental of those who do not follow your own beliefs, be open to their own ideas, and you will develop your own community. Search for Pantheacon as a starter. Very cool convention for those who are searching.

To answer your question: you must be true to your beliefs or your disbeliefs. God wants your heart, not lip service, so you should never pretend to believe something you don't. Stand tall. And you will never find God in religion. You will find him in your heart. Religions are guides, but the Bible is His Word, so study that, not church doctrine. And don't look to other Christians either, because they could be wrong or carnal Christians. Only Christ is perfect. People (even Christians) are not perfect and never will be this side of heaven. Christianity is a walk, a journey of discovery and learning, not rituals.

There are lots of people that disagree with religion. As for life offering you nothing, nothing is easy and life is what you make it.

Society shunning you and life offering you nothing are two completely different things. Fix the latter.

You don't have to pick a religion. If you believe in Jesus you are already saved and that's that. If you don't believe, that's fine too. Only you can make that decison. It doesn't matter what anyone else thinks.

I'd go get a copy of "Conversations With God" by Neale Donald Walsch.

So stop looking to others to give you the answer to your life. Look within yourself. You don't have to belong to a religion to have a meaningful, happy life. Pardon my being trite, but, "follow your bliss."
