i think it's because in america it means like "f uck you" or "screw you" with the finger signifying a guy's...thing.
i heard that back then when the english and french were fighting, captured archers had their fourth and middle fingers cut off so they could never shoot arrows again (try with other fingers and it's wayyyyyy harder) archers would hold up their fingers at the enemy, perhaps in defiance. this story was told by one of my middle school teachers so i dunno.

It's because of what people THINK it means.. it's been used so long that now it has made a meaning of its own. I doubt that could be changed now, though...
actually, it's quite funny to see people's reaction now when you casually flip 'em the bird... XD

because of the obscene meaning behind it. it's offensive.
and only ignorant people use it.
however....i guess.... sticking up a finger is better than sticking out a gun.

It is the intent behind it. Just like why are dirty words dirty... it's not the actual letters put together that make them foul, it's the meaning behind them.
