This sort of thing happens to me all the time. It seems that my circadian clock is set ahead of most people's. I body naturally wake up at 2pm no matter when I go to sleep and I only get tired around 4-6am.
The way I have come to try and adjust lately as been to modulate myself with herbal supplements. I currently take valerian root and melatonin at bedtime. Sometimes you can wash these down with some chamomile tea, which combines the soothing compounds in the herb plus warm temperature of the water to soothe your mind. I also just got some extract of passiflora edulis (passionflower, supposedly a potent herbal sedative) to add to the mix, but I haven't tried it yet.
In the morning, I kickstart myself with caffeine (vivarin) and/or guarana (herb that produces more potent form of caffeine). The combination of these supplements, which often are taken alone may not be suggested medically, but they have been working for me and are the only way to entrain myself to a normal schedule without being tired all day.

If I can't, then I try listening to music. But then again,I'll just be wasting batteries if I really do sleep while listening. I just get tired from doing boring activities. What's the point of staying all night? If there's something to do, then yeah. If not, I like to keep myself occupied with a bottle of ice cold water.

Sometimes. I handle it the same as you now by not fighting to go to sleep. I just get up and read or something until I get tired. If you practise meditation however you can teach yourself how to control your thoughts and empty your mind of 'clutter'. Try reading a book about it one night when you can't sleep :).

Yes, mine is caused by PTSD and I very rarely sleep at night. Sometimes writing a story plot in my mind helps or counting backwards. Usually I get up and use the computer,

Yes, sometimes. I just tell my brain to shut up and ask Jesus to forgive my sins and to give me a good night's sleep. That usually does it. It's also helpful not to eat too close to bedtime. Eat at least three hours before you want to go to sleep.

This happens to me often, but I find that listening to music while in bed is soothing, and lets my mind drift off faster. Also, listening to books on cd puts me to sleep when I'm tired, but my brain won't shut up.

Yes! When I do I lie on the floor and so some slow easy strectching of the legs and back. Then I get back into bed and lie on my back. Starting with my right foot I imagine a wave of relaxation moving in my toes eases the tention. Then wave of relaxation rolls to the ball of my foot easing the muscles and relaxing the foot. As the wave of relaxation eases the tention of the ball of my foot it then gently rolls to the arch of my foot and then the heel of my foot relaxing and soothing me as it goes. Then to the ankle, knee, thigh, buttocks. Then you start on the left leg starting on the toes
