I'll say Sammy Baugh, he played after Jim Thorpe did. It's fairly obvious that any modern NFL player would have dominated in the 20s, I can only assume that the same would be true for a player from the 50s playing in the 20s.

I would have to Say Emmitt Smith. Now don't laugh.
Today's defenses are much more sophisticated and much more detailed, back then the fat men were on the D-line, and all the skinny guys would chase after the runner/catcher of the ball.
The defensive schemes today would give the ol' timey ball players, headaches. Now, even some big fat D-line guys can outrun some tailbacks.
Well, that's my opinion.

Barry Sanders, he played on a team that REALLY sucked every year, a little known statistic of his is he is the all-time leader in yards lost behind the line of scrimmage, that is because he never had a O-Line to open up holes for him, can you imagine if he had good blockers? that guy was amazing.
