Someone already said it, The World According to Garp, and mainly because that was the first movie that we got to see the range of an actor he was and not just some crazy comedian.

I can't believe no one else said this, but I love The Dead Poet's Society. It had equal elements of comedy and tragedy, making it a great movie. It is in my top 10 of all time.
