It is your a/c compressor clutch bearing going bad. It is not your belt, or the a/c compressor itself, It is the compressor clutch bearing. I am 100% sure that is your problem. When the a/c is off, the bearing is spinning as the belt turns the pulley, thus resulting in your squeal, when you turn on the a/c, the clutch assembly magnetically "locks" and starts turning the compressor, ending your squealing. Please get it repaired before it seizes up and does more damage. The excessive heat generated by a worn bearing can deform the front seal on the compressor starting a freon leak or it may heat up the compressor shaft to the point that it will break off.

Could be worn out compressor clutch bearing. When the A/C is off the compressor pulley idles on this bearing. When you turn on the A/C the compressor clutch engages and the pulley drives the compressor and no longer runs idle on the bearing. If the squeel noise happens when you turn on the A/C and then stops squeeling shortly afterward, I would say you have a loose belt driving the compressor.

The a/c pulley bearing could be to blame as this bearing holds the load of the belt tension while the a/c is off. Turn the a/c on and the clutch engages. The a/c clutch bearing is now spinning and holding the load. Since the a/c compressor draws about 8 horsepower a slipping belt would probably get louder.

Could be the fan belt or perhaps the bearing inside the A/C compressor !?! Have a garage check it out, if it's just a belt it won't cost much to replace, if it's a bearing you want to fix it now before it gets worse. It'll cost more to fix if it ceases up possibly causing other damage.

The a/c compressor clutch bearing is going bad. It would be a good idea to have it changed soon. If you don't, it will lock up, causing your belt to break. This could lead to alot of other problems.

Depends on the car, but may be A/C belt or a compressor bearing. I'd have it looked at w/ that in mind.

it's your belt. i had the same problem! it's easy to change it too. What sucks is when it snaps off while you're driving! If that ever happens use panty hose as a replacement until you get a new belt.
