It's a good idea. Sometimes diapers leak, and without a mattress pad, that leakage will go EVERYWHERE. It also makes the bed more comfortable for the baby.

I always used a mattress protector my reason for doing so is simple economics.. the protector is relatively cheap compared to the mattress, not only do babies wee and poo but the can also vomit so nappies wont protect the mattress from everything.

Matress pad are a must in my book- unless the matress has a plastic wipeable covering on it.
My kids always had leaky diapers even though I always bought the nighttime ones for extra protection.
My oldest would make himself puke when he didn't want to go to bed and got a bloody nose occasionally. Luckily his matress was the plastic covered wipeable type.
My youngest I got a new matress for and used a pad on it. He pees so much at night I change his sheets constantly.
When both were newborns it seems as though everytime they peed it leaked out.

any fabric store carries water proof padding this is washable and keeps the mattress fresh ..diapers leak and seep...I had one cut large enough for a twin bed as they get older if there's ever an accident.. don't forget they vomit also and the cotton baling within a mattress holds the odor and isn't easy to clean

If you mean mattress protector as in anything plastic-I wouldn't! I tried burping cloths folded once over and laid them in the areas prone to messes. They also sell cloth chucks like the blue ones they use in the hospital.

Usually the diaper will be enough, but if you want to be extra careful then you should use a protector.

They do contain wet messes like diapers and spit-up so that you can leave off worrying about them until the morning (before I had one, if my daughters diaper leaked she would start crying instantly... now she doesn't even notice till she wakes up). They only cost $10-20.
