Solvents in the nailpolish keep the liquid in the bottle a liquid... sort of like a paint thinner.

When you put it on your finger, the solvents evaporate, and thats why it dries. Since hopefully the bottle is always covered (or covered most of the time) the solvents never evaporate, and thus, its always a liquid!

EDIT: I dont know where people are coming up with these answers.

Note that it has nothing to do with the material that its on. Nail polish will stick to the outside of the nail polish bottle, if you paint it on. The bottle isnt magic, and nailpolish is just like regular old paint.

If you were to transfer the nail polish into any container that you could easily keep the air out of (i.e. a small glass vial, or if you had enough nail polish, a water bottle, etc.) it would remain in its liquid state, just as long as not much air got to it. For example you couldnt dump it in a tupperware container, because the surface area of the air touching it--even when sealed-- would dry it up quickly. This is why nailpolish comes in such small containers with such small openings!

Because the nail polish bottles are made of glass...not keratin! Keratin is the stuff that makes up your fingernails and toenails (as well as your hair, by the way). The nail polish is designed to stick to a keratin surface;not the bottle it's in. The glass happens to be something nail polish doesn't stick to, based on it's properties. Hope this helps explain!! Happy nail polishing!

I think because the nail polish never dries inside the bottle, that's why you need to keep the cap on tight the whole time.

im not sure but in the bottle there is no air for it to dry so it never gets sticky, it stays liquid! thats prolly why! then you put it on your nails in the open air and it dries!

Because it is still in liquid form. It's not exposed to the air so can't dry and "stick."
