While I don't know the text book definition, my understanding of the subconscious mind is one that is aware of what the conscious mind isn't. Like the dreams you have when you sleep, that's your subconscious mind trying to deal with what's going on in life with you, or what happened to you at one point in the past. So it is very much a part of you, but it is a part of you that you're less aware of, and it may be a good thing since it can help you cope with life's adversities.
