I am an avid reader. I have no experience. Have never even been in a school play. Ok, I was mother nature in 1st grade. I have time on my hands this summer and I'm looking for a theater group on the northside Chicago area that would give me a chance to visit rehearsals, help with props, stand in, read lines, etc., and then maybe one day a tiny part.

Check with Steppenwolf, Victory Theater, Goodman, Second City. Theaters always need volunteers and interns so don't be shy about contacting them. Also check the Dramatist Sourcebook is an annual publication that lists theaters all over the country, what they look for, submission guidelines.

Your local community center will have information on theater groups in your area. I recommend that you sign up for a workshop (usually run by community services or the community college). You will not only learn some basics but get inside info on upcoming auditions and what they're looking for.

Check with the local community groups. Plenty of them will accept volunteers to help back stage!

Should be plenty of "community theatre" groups...call the local college drama dept. and ask.
