I don't smoke, read the details before you make assumptions like that. I will never be foolish enough to do any drugs, cigarettes, etc...never. My parents don't do that stuff and neither shall eye.

The most important symptom of allergy is 'itching'. In addition there could be some increased tearing but importantly - mucous strands in the tears. Mucous strands are whitish ropy strands.
Assuming you have the above features, you could have allergic eye disease. Generally allergies are more often during spring and times of high pollen counts. You may be doing something different in summers - perhaps different eye make up or activities that are causing some metal or allergen to be transferred to your eyes, perhaps swimming related, perhaps pets - anyhow - think about what could be a possible cause.
If you have generalised allergies - sinusitis, asthma and allergic dermatitis etc and then your eye allergies may just be another manifestation of a generalised allergic problem.
The best way to proceed might be to get allergy testing done. That may or may not be revealing - but it is available so can be considered.
Also get an eye examination by an eye doctor to rule out other causes of red eye like rosacea related, chronic blepharitis (seborrehea) or dry eye related.
You have the right idea about trying to get rid of the red eye without putting anything in the eye. Figuring out what is causing the red eye is the all important step.

Visine allergy drops are GREAT, but putting spoons that have been in the freezer @ least an hour over your eyes helps with swelling and might help get the red out as well.

Eye drops are the only thing I've ever heard of for getting red eyes gone. You can always take Claritin to get rid of allergies but I've never heard of anything else.

You could try an oral allergy medication, like Benadryl or Sudafed. That is the only thing I can think of where you wouldn't have to put anything in your eyes.

Oral allergy medications have little affect on ocular allergies. Why do you not want to put anything in your eye? Talk to your optometrist about your problem and see if you can be prescribed topical allergy drops - they work wonders.

Try splashing cold water in your eyes. Other than that, there really isn't anything else you can do without putting a product into your eyes (drops).

my answer is better than visine and eye drops because she didn't want to put anything in her eyes but I guess you would have to put something in them to gouge them out so actually my answer is just as dumb as visine and eye drops hehe
