no he was not right and he has to live with the consequences.......people here are somewhat shallow.......in sports trash talking happens a lot........players are used to it but few react because they know it's just to get them off their game...........to all you Zidane crybabies........may I remind you that Totti in 2004 was suspended for 3 games for spitting at a player who provoked him...........he shout his mouth and paid the price.........bottom line.........you don't use violence or spit on anyone in a soccer game.........this is not like someone coming up to you from the blue on the street and thrashing you.........this was a soccer game with hundreds of millions of people and children watching..........what a disgrace he is!!!!!!!

I don't condone the actions of either player. I wish he had handled it differently but I was not the captain of a side, with a mother critically ill in hospital, playing his final game ( one of such importance) nor dealing with all the emotions he must have been and can understand his "snap".
You ask what he has done> Well we only see the Zidane on the pitch when he plays and a few things have been unsavoury. So have they been for Materazzi. That is a fact. They both have some blots and indiscretions when it comes to behavioural play and at times sportsmanship. I'd say go to the Real Madrid website and see what Zidane has done, see what those who shared his life and locker room really think of Zizou. They are the ones that truly know the player and the man, and all say besides his football he is a humble and good man and human being who is a loyal friend and team mate, who is helpful and totally committed to children and many other charities and world problems. Go see for yourself what the man is about and decide for yourself his character.

First of all...Italian Jack ****? Why??? That's so not cool!
But in order to respond to your answer...I think it was totally wrong of him to do that for two reasons! One...I understand that in the heat of the moment, someone may loose their cool...but it's NEVER right to hit someone. After all, soccer or any other sport is still a game. It's entertainment...that's it. I think it shows a lack of personality and self control to totally loose their cool. Second of all...Zideine had already announce he was going to retired after the world cup. He's a great player who has done wonderful things for French Soccer...but to finish his career that way....? That just left a lot of his fans with a bad taste. If he had done this in any other game, either during the 2006 world cup or in some other game or tournament, it wouldn't have mattered. The fact is that his last soccer move was to hit someone...people now will always remember the bad...instead of the good!

in soccer there are many of sh*t talkers that always say things to piss one off and try to make them look bad or make them get a red/yellow card. these things are common in soccer. many people have talked **** to me and some teammates and we just ignore it. Zidane shoul have ignored that crap. hes a pro and should have heard sh*t talkers before. i think he was wrong to hit materazzi, who is not a jack ***.
Zidane messed up and that is HIS mistake.
