Well, you can do the most common method and use the installation disk to install the camera and then connect it by USB ( not required when using Windows XP). In the case of my camera, I have to put it into the mode that lets you review pictures to get it to work with my computer but different models and brands vary (mine is a canon). The software should guide you through the rest.
The other method is to use the device in your camera that holds the pictures which could be the SD Card or something else. With newer computers, they would have slots that you can stick them in or you can buy an all-in-one reader.
In conclusion, I would just go with the USB cable though

You should have a USB cable supplied with your camera. If you have no supplied software just connect the cable to your computer, then plug it into the camera. There is a Wizard that will load the pictures for you.

Your camera should have come with a software program for you to install. Also it should have included a cable that plugs into your USB port. Should be self-explanatory when you install the software. Or you should have an instruction booklet.
Type the name of the camera in the "search engine" and you should be able to download what you need.
Hope that helps.

Buy a card reader and then take the card from the camera and put it into the reader (and plug the reader into your computer)
