Sometimes a question is so misguided, like being racist, sexist or homophobic, that you need to point it out to the asker. I'd like to think they didn't realize how hurtful they were being in asking it. It gives them another chance in picking their "Best Answer" or adding details - maybe they communicated something incorrectly.
Sometimes the question is just so self-righteous that I want the asker to know that not everyone feels the same [warped] way.

It's about the points and being irritated. I've answered questions that irritated the crap out of me just because I wanted the asker to realize how stupid they were. It's an ego thing.

Some people are just irritating and they need to be told about it. Plus, we're here to answer questions and get points.

Sometimes I do it to try to stop someone from making a mistake. The most common one is people who ask, "What do you think of me naming my child X?" with "X" being something really strange, like Chanukwoohoo or Chantelisaenda. Parents think these names are "cute" or "unique," but they will only lead to a life of frustration for the poor child.

No kidding. It really bugs me when people say stuff like, "that's stupid, why do you care?" or "i don't know, sorry." I'm like, if you don't know, then don't answer! It's not very helpful for people who want to ask real questions on here!

My guess would be because they want the points. So they keep answering questions. :)

I try to skip the questions that irritate me, offend me, or the ones I don't know the answer to.
