RAM is the way to go.
Go to http://www.coastmemory.com and look for your computer and model. This will do the trick.
Also, keep your own Anti-virus up to date, and check the status regularly.
Get and update several Anti-spyware solutions. I use AD-AWARE and SpyBot Search & Destroy. I use the free versions from http://www.download.com Update and run these regularly. Especially IMMEDIATELY after an upexpected pop-up.
Download and install FireFox free from http://www.mozilla.com This is a browser that is safer to use than IE. Use this for general surfing and google searching. Only use IE when you MUST have IE, such as Windows Updates.
If you have Windows XP with SP2, activate the Windows firewall and check the status. If you don't, get Zone Alarm the free version from http://www.zonelabs.com
Take these steps to keep your computer ALIVE.

first of all buying a bigger hard drive doesnt make ur computer faster, just store more stuff.
I am going for my A+ so maybe i can give u some advice.
Make ur computer faster is not adding 1 thing will make it faster. is A WHOLE. maybe u are new to computer i use a easier way to explain to u.
For instance u have a 4 man team, u want to win the race. u cant just make 1 man fast. u need to the whole team fast. and how to do that?
These things u need to upgrade in order to make ur computer FEEL actually faster ->
CPU (the brain) upgrade 2 generation. P2 -> P4
P3 --> 64 bit
Ram (is like a bucket that transport water, bigger it is, more water u can transfer)
make it at least 2Ghz
Hard drive -> u should have at least a 7200 rpm Hard drive. if u have anything slower upgrade it.
Motherbaord -> if u change ur CPU u need to change ur Motherboard too! find one that support the cpu u want to buy and at least have PCI express
Graphic card -> this is quite important if u play games. at least get a 256mb AGP if u cant afford PCI express
Daily mantainace -> plz have an anti virus spyware protection.
Any spyware, virus will drmatacially slow ur computer porformance
Less background program = better proformace. for instance if u know nobody online, close yahoo messenger, msn messenger by right click the icon on ur bottom right. (Not just close the screen, but actually shut down the prgoram) It frees up some ram memory for u
Advance -> ***** ONLY IF U KNOW WHAT U DOING THEN DO THIS ****increase ur vitual memory from ur hard drive
u can follow the steps from his website.. too lazy to tell u the steps

Simultaneously listening to music (even mp3) and web surfering are not particularly CPU intensive.so if you already have a CPU that is around 700 MHz or higher, then you should install more RAM or replace your RAM with more, making sure that it is rated to meet or exceed your CPU's FSB speed. Adding a 100 GB hard drive likely did diddly squat for your performance.
This all assuming of course that you don't have any spyware or crapware hogging all the cycles on your machine and your hard drive isn't hopelessly fragmented. Of course this isn't an exhaustive list, but should be enough to prevent the Yahoo Answers Hamster from taking away my trolling license.

attach some wheels to the part of the computer which makes contact with a surface. i'd recommend some plastic fins for stabilization. a long windy hill ending in a cliff is quite appropriate for testing out the wheels... give the computer a push at the top of the hill then, as it goes off the edge of the cliff into the beautiful abyss awaiting below, cheer wildly. trust me... u'll feel better in the morning.

boost up RAM... Random access memory.... the more of it u have, the faster your computer can go... if u wanna know how much RAM u can right click on my computer and click on properties. on the General tab you will see _____ of RAM somewhere usually around bottom. better, faster computers usually have at least 512Mb, but thats not enough for much, so best is 1Gb or more
I have 1.5 Gb and it cost me about a hundred bucks to add 1gb to my 512 MB. U can usually go and find RAM in computer stores. they need to know exactly what type computer u have though

Buy a new computer with a faster hard drive and more ram. A bigger hard drive doesnt affect the speed of your system.

The MOST cost effective and BEST thing you can do it buy more RAM. Find out what type your comp uses and buy enough so you have 1-2 GB total.

Upgrade your Processor (I prefer a Pentium 4 Extreme Edition with HT technology) and some more RAM (1-2GB would be great)
