Why do we put candles on a birthday cake, and where did that tradition originate?
Candy Sparkes was the first person to place candles on a birthday cake, and that was light years ago.
Steve Barrett, Glenbrook
We put candles on birthday cakes to honour the birthday person - usually one candle for each year. The custom goes back to the ancient Greeks, when worshippers of Artemis, goddess of the moon and hunting, used to put honey cakes on the altars of her temple on the sixth day of every month. It was believed that the candles had the power to grant a wish and ensure a happy year. The wish had to remain secret and would come true only if all the candles were blown out with one puff. The candles lost their magical power if the wish was uttered aloud.

It's just tradition.
The next time you make a wish on your birthday, don't make it a wish that you know will not come true, like winning the lottery or getting a pony. Make it a good wish, and don't think about it for too long, then maybe it will come true!

It's just a tradition. Dreams come true only if you work toward that end. I used to live in Virginia. I wanted to live in Nevada. I moved there but got laid-off after six weeks and had to move back. It took me 22 months to get back here, but I never gave up on the dream. I worked and saved my money until I had enough to move back and live until I found a job. I have been here since Septemebr of 2004 and my dream has truly come true. I love it here and will never live anywhere else.

it's just a tradition originated from the old times. you see, people didn't live very long in the old times, plus, your birthday only comes once a year. so, essentially, there really isn't a point to it but it's more of a tradition.

It's a way of focusing your thoughts on what you would like for the future. Even if the wish fairy doesn't exist, you might help it come true by your own actions.
