My mother always said 'kittycorner', but I thought she made it up.

I've always known the expression as "kitty corner" but a friend of mine on the US eastern seaboard has always used the expression "catty corner" so the difference may simply be a regional variation on the "same" term. I remember when I was a child this was sometimes referred to as Barnes' Dance.

The correct term is "Catty Corner" it is from1838 from now- obsolete cater {To set or move} "Diagonally" and from 1577 from M.fr. Catre "Four," from L. quattuor.
