I think the more interesting question is: Would THEY agree?

Yes, by western standards, Islamic women are basically slaves.
By Islamic standards, western women are by-and-large whores.

Before you disregard their opinion, recognize that they have an entirely
different set of values than you or I: They believe that exposing a little
leg cheapens the woman, that speaking out turn affronts the family, etc.

Maybe you don't agree with those things, but what standards do you live
by? Are you sure they don't look arcane to them?

In the United States, we value freedom - though we sometimes have
a hard time defining it. As Jimmy Carter said, "Sometimes freedom
means the freedom to eat." Its amazing what freedoms you don't
have if you are hungry.

I am guessing that where their next meal comes from is far more
important to Islamic women than how much face their burka covers.

I don't know if the word slave is appropriate. I do know the men are the head of the household and the women have strong restrictions on their actions and mode of dress. I also know that some men in many religions take extreme actions when the women do not follow "religious" rules including killing them or having them commit suicide. In the strictist sense this is not slavery, but it is certainly inhumane from most Americans point of view. I just don't know enough about Islam to clarify this further.

No they are absolutely not. This one of those prejudiced remarks made by people who do not know anything about the Islam and put a negative label on it just to stigmatize and that is unfortunately very sad. It would be better if people would open themselves up for different cultures and religions so that there would be a better understanding and people would learn to respect and accept each other for who we all are.
Making superficial remarks without knowing what one is talking about isn't making things easier for any of us and will make the gap between us people of different religions or whatever it is what makes the difference only bigger. We can learn so much from each other just by opening up and embracing each others differences and by becoming more tolerant.

No, they have as many rights as women in classic greece, and NO ONE calls them slaves!
Just because you think their moves are restricted that does no turn them into slaves. Islam has a set of laws working for 1400 years, and as a society and culture, they have outlived Aztecs, Mongols, Merovingians, Vikings. So i think we owe them respect, since their way of living has had a working span that is way longer than most western countries.

this question can be best answered by a muslim woman, and look how much muslim women have answered this question, i think non of them are muslim
i am a muslim and i studied islam, and follow Islam.
there is nothing like that. there is no concept of slaveness of women in Islam. Islam just says that women should be honoured and give rights. Islam says that women should not be used as a symbol of glamour, sex etc as it is in western world.
i am a muslim and i have full rights as a human.
so please please and pleasssssssssssssssse first study and learn Islam and then give answer.

Well, through an outsider's perspective whos been brought up in a different society with different values and a different religion, etc., yeah it looks that way. But if you look at it through their eyes, theyre fine with the Islamic way of life. Women see their cultural dress as a sign of respect, saying 'hands off' to other men. They cover themselves up because their husbands want them to cover up because women see it as their husband not wanting any other man to look at them. It's a sign of respect to these women and a sign that they follow their religion intently.

This may be so, but you have to concede that the men are slaves to Islam.

And let's remember that other societies are rooted in obsolete 'god'-centric orthodoxy, and their women are as 'enslaved' as those of Islam.

ISLAM is a culture and nobody holds the authority to judge, ridicule or accuse any type of culture.

It is impossible for people living in a completely different society or culture to understand other cultures. I suggest you use a good library and read alot on these type of cultures. It will open a different view.

I thought men everywhere assumed women were their slaves. Silly me. Personally, I think there's nothing prettier than a naked man in chains kneeling to me. If you don't want to be a slave, don't assume others don't either.

I'm a christian in islamic society, women have dignity and respect here.
first rule is to respect bot parents, however they are not equals for men in many things, their share in harritage is less and they get less benifits in heavin.
women cover thier heads is not islamic, it started with jewish and christianity, nuns still cover their hair, and this is not a sign of disrespect.
i can't get too deep in this cuz it won't end... anyway it has both good and negative aspects, every culture has its own reasons and hestorical preview
