I just have to laugh because someone called me a hippie (in a bad way) while answering one of my questions. OK, so I'm into yoga, meditation, and love reading about taoist philosophy.

But...I live in the city, I'm (fairly) young, and I have a professional job. And I love reading Ayn Rand.

So, I'm curious for your opinion...am I a hip-yuppie? LOL
And also, what category do you think you fall into more, or is it pretty equal?

Lotte: I really love your answer. It's true that someone my age (32) can't be a hippie, because it was more of a generational thing.

But trust me, all my friends and family think I'm very strange for the yoga, meditation and taoism. I'm interested in these topics for my own reasons. As they're trendy now, I am able to find others to practice and discuss with. But most of the people in my life don't agree with my choices.

Something to think about. :)

Terms like hippie / yuppie / liberal / conservative are pretty much useless.
You are a perfect example - you are much more than any one label!

I like to consider myself a unique independent but have been called a conservative hippie in the past.

I think you are a yuppie.
I was a hippie, back in the '60s and '70s. I smoked pot. I did lots of other drugs. I went to love-ins and be-ins,and "Happenings" and had my naked body painted-(in public.) I protested with signs against the Viet Nam war and for ERA. I drew peace symbols on all my stuff, and played a recorder. I quit my job an took a bus to Nederland CO and lived in the national forest with 20 other kids called the "rainbow-STP Family." I washed my hair in freezing, cold mountain stream water.and went for days without bathing. I hitch-hiked to school and flunked out of college. I quit several jobs over important stuff like wearing mini-skirts to work. I was a go-go dancer. Then when I was 24, I met and immediately married a hippier guy than me. I got pregnant, and grew up over night. I wouldn't trade my experiences for anything. I am not a hippie anymore, tho. I am a hippie-sympathizer, and very liberal and atheist, and still do my "own thing."
You are not a hippie because you read something or do yoga. You were a hippie, if you lived in the 60s or 70s and LIVED that life.
You are a yuppie, honey. Yoga and meditation and Tao is IN STYLE. You wouldn't be doing it, if all your friends and family thought you were stupid/dangerous/misguided/certifiable for doing it. My family thought I had lost my mind. I was proud of myself for being so wild, and anti-everything they stood for.
Follow your heart. Be who YOU are, and make the world better.

If you agree with Ayn Rand, you're not a hippie. I don't think people need to categorize themselves though. I'm an artist, mostly vegetarian, make my own granola, live in a small town and dress like a hippie, but I don't call myself a hippie. It's not like I agree with all hippies or do all the same things. People are just individuals.

If I HAD to choose I would go with Hippie, Yuppie to me is someone who is a s.o.b and is all about money and is in the country club and play tennis. To me Yuppie is a bad thing. Hippie is all about love and you don't need money to have a good time. Someone who is down to earth and not stuck up. I hope i didn't offend anyone!?! ekkkkk!!!! >_< but that's my thoughts on that, you sound like more of a hippie.

I am 45 and my sisters call me their little hippie sister. When actually hippies were like 10 years older than me. Could be a mix of naturalist in there.

Do you drive foreign car, like a Toyota or BMW? Because that would definitely put you in the Yuppie category.
